Holding absence – modern life is lonely – album review

After a slight delay, Holding Absence unveil their fourth studio album, ‘Modern Life Is Lonely’, and their continued ambition to create something bigger and bolder than what came before is here for all to see.

Throughout the evolution of the band, they have always strived to produce grandiose statements, and this album is certainly their most ambitious and carefully crafted to date.

As the title suggests, the core themes of the record revolve around the ever-maddening world and how lonely it is becoming for us to live in. Through inward reflection and outward observation, the trio have again captured the feeling of the moment in an emotive and absorbing collection of songs.

The sound of the band has continually expanded and does so again with the atmospherics dialled right up and the trio taking more than a slight diversion into the world of hyperpop.

Their post-hardcore roots remain with the increase of electronic experimentation only making those choruses catchier, the harder moments more impactful and the overall gravitas of the record more majestic.

Holding Absence have always worn their hearts on their sleave and that’s what has built such a strong connection with their fans. ‘Modern Life Is Lonely’ is only going to make that connection stronger.
