Dream Wife – ‘Orbit’

On the single the band explain, “Written through the joy of jamming together and locking into the groove like a multi limbed space age organism, Orbit has a dance rock edge from the early noughties of bands like New Young Pony Club and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Lyrically, it was inspired by post-lockdown London coming back to life and sharing a space through friendship and community. And how each day you never know what’s in store for you or how a stranger can become someone close to you – for a day, a heartbeat, a phase, or a lifetime.”

On the album, “This is what I thought we sounded like all along,” Shelton laughs. “It’s always felt like a melody-forward band to me, but I think now we’re finally achieving what I was always setting out to do.”

Lambrini Girls – ‘Lads Lads Lads’

With just a month to go until their debut EP ‘You’re Welcome’, out 19th May, Lambrini Girls share new single ‘Lads Lads Lads’ about toxic masculinity.

“In order to be a lad, make sure to follow the following guidelines: excessive drinking, harassing anyone with a pulse and starting fights. Most importantly, make sure to never talk about your feelings as this simply cannot be associated with manliness. Lad culture is the shit stain on the bathroom floor and toxic masculinity is the toilet paper that refuses to unstick from the shoe of society. Nobody wins.” says the band.

headcage – ‘false gold’

Alternative Post-Hardcore band headcage have shared their brand new single ‘false gold’.

“With this track I’m trying to lay down the premise of always wanting more from life, as in wealth, status or fame but ultimately realising the people and culture that those things predominantly exist in are not the world I come from or identify with in any way, shape or form. To put it simply, it’s something I’ve always wanted for so long, and is also something I hate”. – Vocalist, Leyum Pattinson.

Grove Street – ‘Lessons of the Past’

Recently signed to UNFD, get yourselves acquainted with Grove Street via recent single, ‘Lessons of the Past’!

“Grove Street becoming a part of UNFD felt like it was meant to happen,” says guitarist Sandy. “A label that fully believes in us and wants to nurture our growth as a band is a rare thing to be seen. This band started out as fun between friends, we never had any expectations of reaching the levels we have and with UNFD behind us we can push those levels even further.”

Speaking of the track, the band share, “Lessons of the Past focuses on police brutality, abuse of power, systemic oppression and racism. People not taking a stand against these things only encourages them to manifest further, and we as people must do better to hold those in power accountable.”

Blind Channel share new single ‘FLATLINE’

Blind Channel – ‘FLATLINE’

Our News Report heads now across to the best new releases from the past week and we begin with Blind Channel.

Following the release last year of their ‘Lifestyles of the Sick & Dangerous’ album, Finland’s Blind Channel are kicking off 2023 with their new standalone single ‘FLATLINE’.

“This is the beginning of the next chapter of our career,” say the band. “Flatline is Blind Channel on steroids. We captured the energy of last year’s 130 shows into one song and threw it to a Berlin rave. The song was written with songwriting duo Blyne and it’s one of the heaviest tracks we’ve ever made. This is pretty unique from scratch. If you’re sick and tired of ups and downs, this song might help you.”

Softcult share new single ‘Love Song’

Softcult – ‘Love Song’

Next up in our News Report are Canadians Softcult, who this week shared their latest single, ‘Love Song’, which you can check out above. The single comes ahead of new EP, ‘see you in the dark’, which is out on March 24th.

“This is an anxious love song,” Mercedes explains. “It’s about loving someone so intensely that you find yourself in constant fear of losing them. Sometimes love and happiness can feel like these unattainable things that are too good to be true. Once we’ve finally found something our hearts have been yearning for, it’s hard to shake the thought that we will inevitably have to let it go. But these gnawing thoughts can get in the way of us allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, or enjoying our relationships for fear that they won’t last.”

On the video Mercedes says, “We wanted the video to tell the story in a different way, focussing more on getting carried away with our own imaginations when it comes to falling in love. We filmed in a small legion hall and tried to make the ambiance a little depressing and mundane. Our main character is an elderly man who’s sort of given up hope. He’s there having a beer alone while everyone else is playing bingo. When he lays eyes on Gina, his co-star, he gets lost in fantasy, imagining not only the love they might have together but the type of person he could be if he had love in his life.”

ANGER PARTY – ‘Had Enough’

Alternative Horror Rock band ANGER PARTY are back with their sophomore single ‘Had Enough’!

“Everyday we wake up and have the same conversations, with the same people, on the same subjects, with no purpose or profound effect on our lives. We create a state of perpetual monotony and anxiety, while wearing masks to hide our every emotion. All this is done to make prying onlookers think that everything is fine. ‘Had Enough’ reflects on the deepest, darkest ways to break this cycle and exercise our true feelings on the world. It shows our desire to remove the mask, wipe away the make-up and reveal our true fears, frustrations, aggressions and vulnerability” – Lead Vocalist, Ashley Wilson

Militarie Gun – ‘Do It Faster’

Los Angeles’ Militarie Gun share a thrilling new single in ‘Do It Faster’.

Speaking about the song, vocalist Ian Shelton states: “It is about my overall impatience with life. The agonising wait for things to materialise
so before resigning to do it myself, I’m imploring the world to just move faster.”

De’Lour – ‘No One

South Wales based band De’Lour share their staggering new single ‘No One’.

“No One was one of the first songs we wrote together as a band in a room and not remotely. We got together at the first opportunity we could when lockdown was lifted in 2020. When we wrote No One, we wanted to express our thoughts on society’s lack of self reflection. We all worry about what everyone else thinks of us, but when you boil it down, no one is paying attention, no one really cares. People are only really concerned with what’s going on in their world, inside their own heads. So we wanted to express the feeling that we shouldn’t care about what other people think, we should just go for it if it’s what we want or what we think is best.” – De’lour

Dancing On Tables – ‘So What’

Scotland’s Dancing On Tables have released their debut album, ‘Colour In The Grey’, including the single, ‘So What’!

The band says, “It feels like the last 3 years of our life have all been building up to this album. You can hear the journey that we’ve been on as a group as you go through the tracks, with stories of love, happiness, loss and frustration sang on top of a sound that we have worked hard to define by combining our original rock influences with our favourite modern music alt-pop styles.

The album is a collection of songs that were put together over a time where as musicians, we were suddenly stuck at home after being used to being on the road for most of the year. Like most people, it was tough for us to stay motivated during this, but working together (remotely) on music was the highlight of each day and left us with over 70 tracks to choose from for this album.

For us, writing and recording this album really was the ‘colour in the grey’ of every day life at this point.”

Humour – ‘Jeans’

Fellow Scots Humour have released, ‘Jeans’, the final single from their EP, ‘Pure Misery’.

The band had the following to say about the single:

“Jeans is about a character who is internally trying to build himself up and convince himself that he’s a successful and confident no-nonsense man. But he periodically has lapses in this forced self-assuredness and realises that he is not any of those things and is in fact quite a sad, pathetic and laughable character. Much like myself.”

Jamie Beale – ‘Champagne People’

Jamie Beale has released debut album, ‘Hello Nimbus’ featuring the single ‘Champagne People’.

Speaking about the inspiration for the single, Jamie says: “ I feel that we are living in this weird age where people are willing to do anything for fame. You see it all the time on social media – it’s so easy to put up a veil and hide all the realities and imperfections of life that ultimately make us human. Quite often, in these industries that promote the idea of fame as success, people surround themselves with an entourage of fake people; people that are only really there to further their own careers. On the outside looking in, it seems that no-one in these circles are truly content, but instead are lonely and looking to fill that void with possessions or short lived moments of attention and gratification.

“I guess I can’t help but feel for these people, so I wrote a song about someone who’s trying to climb the social ladder, and ends up alone, hiding behind a pretty picture of how they want their life to look.”

Skunk Anansie – ‘Can’t Take You Anywhere’

There was also new music this week from British rock icons Skunk Anansie who debuted new track, ‘Can’t Take You Anywhere’.

Discussing the song Skin explains, â€œThis track is a double-edged sword. We all have that one friend that we love but is a total embarrassment to us, a mate that has no off button and no filter. So if they aren’t losing their phone/keys/coat, they’re saying some stuff that will defo get you cancelled by all your other mates. This song is about how polarised the world is now, and how careful you need to be. It’s about dealing with the new world order of friendship, as never before have I had great long term friends develop completely opposing views to mine. It’s about having to navigate and understand people, keeping the love and respect but also standing firm in your opinions.”

Crows share new track ‘Garden of England’

Crows – ‘Garden of England’

Crows debuted new single ‘Garden of England’ this week which you can watch the video for above.

The track will feature on new album, ‘Beware Believers’ which is out April 1st!

Singer James Cox explains, “This is straight-up our Brexit anthem. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less which way you voted, your vote, your choice. I just hated how much Brexit had become so ingrained in our day to day life. First thing I’d hear about when I woke up and the last thing I’d read before I went to sleep at night. It became all people spoke about. ‘Garden of England’ is more of a comment about the divisiveness it caused, splitting families, friends, widening the north-south divide and empowering nationalism. Public figures’ ability to lie publicly and not be held accountable, it’s just dangerous dog-whistle politics that doesn’t belong in the UK.”

News Report

As always we finish our News Report with the latest additions to our ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist!

‘BLACK TAR’ – PIT PONY

First up are fuzz-rock five-piece Pit Pony and their new single ‘Black Tar’.

Speaking about the track, singer Jackie Purver explains “It’s quite literally about anxiety, about putting the work in to improve things and going back to the beginning. Feeling like you can’t get anything right and you’ll feel like that forever. The whole track being the same riff throughout, and driven by the constant throbbing bass, really conveys the feeling of that constant cycle. That treadmill you feel like you can’t get off.”

Jackie continues, “Of course you do get off, and you can feel better, but it takes time and work. The jagged and garagey sound lends itself to the stark melody and lyrics. It’s not one to overthink. By the end of the song I’m telling myself to snap out of it and keep going.”

‘CAROUSEL’ – REMINDERS

Next is the new single from Isle of Wight indie punks Reminders, ‘Carousel’!

Commenting on the track, front man Leo Dyke says: â€œâ€˜Carousel’ is a song about telling people how you feel and looking for a sense of relief. Nearly everyday we are asked a variation of ‘how are you?’, and we all say ‘good’, and that made me think; what sort of chaos would ensue if we were honest? At the time I was desperate to be honest with somebody about how I felt, but I didn’t feel comfortable telling anybody ‘I need to vent’. This song is all the things I would have said if I felt as though I could have.”

“The genesis of the lyrics comes from a John Lennon song called ‘Watching the Wheels’, except that song is pretty optimistic. ‘Carousel’ is its angry step-child. Bottling all of my feelings only led to being pissed off with everybody anyway, and caused me to fall out with the people around me. That’s what the bridge is about: we’re all too insecure to talk about how we feel, while being simultaneously too arrogant to concede, and once a row has gone too far, nobody is willing to stand down or rationalise, when all I was really looking for was someone to talk to.”

‘CIGARETTE SMILE’ – THIS DAZE

Finally this week is the track ‘Cigarette Smile’ from Norwegian indie punks This Daze.

Regarding the single This Daze say, â€œâ€˜Cigarette Smile’ is the colourful person outside the pub with a cig between their lips. The song portrays adolescent themes of distant love together with the figurative and literal fear of meeting each other. The lyric “pick me up in your painted life” represents the wish of getting swept up by the romanticised picture you make upon meeting someone for the first time. If this image is flawed or genuine it does not matter for young adults taking chances. This song for us encapsulates the feelings of youth and being young. We feel that both the lyrics, the attitude of our performances and the urgency of the song reflects being young.”
