Slam Dunk Festival reveals 2023 Line-Up

Welcome everyone to another edition of our weekly music News Report!

We start this week with festival announcements and we can’t begin anywhere else other than Slam Dunk Festival. The dual location event has revealed the first batch of bands set for Leeds and Hatfield next year and it’s a stunner!

On tap are The Offspring, Enter Shikari, Billy Talent, Bowling For Soup, Less Than Jake, Creeper, Holding Absence, Trash Boat and Kids In Glass Houses amongst many more.

Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari comments:

“I’ve been intoxicated by the idea of headlining Slam Dunk again ever since our Take To The Skies celebration headline set back in 2017. It’s such a great festival, always nails its bills, and has the added bonus that us lads can actually cycle to the Southern date, being that Hatfield is a neighbouring town to us!

In fact, essentially, this will be our biggest β€œhometown” show ever, now that the festival has grown even more. I cannot wait. In fact, I will not wait. I demand we play this tomorrow!

I think playing outdoors is my favourite thing to do in life. Just being able to look up and see the sky, with the expanse of people underneath it, all sharing the same emotions and experience, it’s just such a raw, beautiful, and reifying thing.

Slam Dunk is a festival I try to attend every year regardless of whether we’re playing it. I love both the sites, and it’s always full of mates and has such a convivial vibe. (That’s my word of the week).

We’re already thinking about stage production ideas, we’re going to do everything we can to make this our biggest show yet.”

Live At Leeds: In The City line-up gets bigger

Speaking about the new additions to Live At Leeds: In The City, Festival Promoter Joe Hubbard said: β€œAfter the incredible reaction to our first wave of names, we’re delighted to announce over 80 new artists joining us across Leeds City Centre this October. There’s something incredible about bringing together some of the most exciting names in new music that us in the Live At Leeds office have been playing constantly or lucky enough to see this year – and Live At Leeds: In The City 2022 feels like the perfect combination of artists we know are set for massive things in the year ahead.

Courteeners announce return to Heaton Park

Our News Report moves on to the biggest tour announcements from the past week, but we start off with another huge summer show set for 2023.

Courteeners will be returning to Heaton Park to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of their debut album, ‘St.Jude’.

Speaking about the special β€˜St Jude’ Heaton Park show, Liam Fray says:
β€œThey grow up so fast. Can’t believe our darling St. Jude is 15 next year. Think it’s time for a celebration and we all know that great things come in threes….The Star Wars Trilogy, Sooty, Sweep & Soo and now, here we are, with the third instalment of β€˜Courteeners at Heaton Park’.

June 2015. June 2019 and now June 2023 …

This time, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its release we’ll be playing ST. JUDE (in full) PLUS (of course) THE HITS.  I can’t think of any better way to celebrate than to make the pilgrimage to Heaton Park with like-minded souls and lose ourselves like it’s 2008. Pulled Apart By Horses share ‘Sleep In Your Grave’

Pulled Apart By Horses – ‘Sleep In Your Grave’

Pulled Apart By Horses this week shared new track, ‘Sleep In Your Grave’, which you can check out above. The track comes ahead of fifth album ‘Reality Cheques’, out September 30th.

Commenting on the band’s sonic evolution for the new record, vocalist Tom Hudson says: β€œOne major thing we all chatted about was the β€˜less is more’ approach, so we made a collective decision for me to ditch my guitar. It was a logical and simple way of trimming the fat, it gave us a more direct β€˜to the point’ urgency. Instead of the racket of multiple duelling guitars and a cacophony of noise, everything had a pocket to sit in. A sonic corner. PABH 2.0.”

β€œWhilst we were working through writing and jamming, we also experimented with load of different recording techniques, an array of vintage microphones that we’d accumulated, trashed 70’s WEM guitar combo amps, routing vocals through old fender spring reverb heads, manipulating sounds with Space Echo tape effects and a load of other things for us to play around with.”

October Drift – ‘Waltzer’

October Drift released new single, ‘Waltzer’, this week, which you can check out above. The tracks will feature on upcoming album, ‘I Don’t Belong Anywhere’, which is out October 14th.

Regarding the single frontman Kiran Roy says, β€œβ€˜Waltzer’ always makes me think of Robert Eggars film The Lighthouse. The isolation and spiralling madness of the film really echoes with this song. I guess it’s mainly about the fog of depression. It’s a kind of focus lens on my lowest and darkest thoughts, as well as a reflection of people I love and care about who have themselves battled with these kinds of things.”

Charlotte Wessels debuted her latest single, ‘Toxic’, this week which you can listen to above. The track will feature on new album, ‘Tales From Six Feet Under Vol II’, which is out October 7th.

On ‘Toxic’, Charlotte says: “‘Toxic’ is a direct response to the populism, greed, misogyny and victim blaming that come screaming from our screens on a daily basis, and with the recent overturning of Roe v Wade, it has sadly become only more relevant since its initial release on Patreon. I hope you like the song but I mostly hope the issues it deals with will be a thing of the past before I am.”

Mimi Barks – ‘nihil’

Doom trap pioneer Mimi Barks has announced her highly anticipated upcoming mixtape β€˜DEADGIRL’ which is set for release in December 2022. She has also dropped a new offering in the form of defying single β€˜nihil’.

β€œβ€˜nihil’ is the first track I wrote after having my entire music collection and visuals wiped off all DSP’s including YouTube in 2020. And just when I entered the void, thinking this is it, my brother KOEN sent this beat, which lead me to writing the first song for what would later become the DEADGIRL Mixtape. I needed to move forward from this, and β€œnihil” be my reboot in a paradoxical way.β€β€œThere lies great power in resistance” – Mimi Barks

Indie rock band Sunsleeper have shared their new single ‘Quitter’.

β€œβ€™Quitter’ is about the pains and joys of being a band,” says vocalist Jeffery Mudgett. β€œHow touring is both incredibly fulfilling while also being a detriment to normalcy and comfortability. Poking fun at the comparison game. The realization that creating music in a live scenario is often the place I feel the most present, when I allow myself to be.”

Dub War share new single ‘Vibes In The Place’

Dub War – ‘Vibes In The Place’

Next up is Dub War who this week shared their latest single, ‘Vibes In The Place’, which you can listen to above.

Speaking on the track Benji Webbe says, “Vibes In The Place was one of the first songs we wrote when we got back in a room together. It features that old little Yamaha ha ha ha ha keyboard that we use live right up to this day. What’s particularly special about this song is that a massive friend and fan mixed this track – Mr Rick Will. Rick was down to mix the whole album but due to one thing or the other we went with Richard Jackson.Β
Β
For me this song is inspired by Talking Heads – I’m sure many will say β€˜what are you on about’, but for me it’s definitely got a flavour of David Byrne (I guess it’s the part where I say β€˜hold the door’!)
Β
β€œVibes In The Place” definitely captured Dub War from back in the day – this track is one of the songs we actually wrote with a drummer in the room, Mikee β€œKRUPA” Gregory.Β

This song captures the live element of Dub War and once it’s known by the β€˜War lovers, it will for sure be a live favourite..
Β
Sadly after mixing this song, Rick Will past away… So this is a track that means so much to me, Jeff and Richie.”

The track will feature on new album, ‘Westgate Under Fire’, which is out August 5th.

Gun release new single ‘Backstreet Brothers’

There was also new music this week from Gun. The band debuted new single, ‘Backstreet Brothers’, which you can listen to above.

The band will be releasing a new album, ‘Calton Songs’ on October 14th.

Jools GizziΒ says, β€œWhen the pandemic hit we realised that it was the perfect time to try and counteract the bleakness that was all around. It felt like we couldn’t write anything, or of course tour. Out of that darkness came a desire to completely rework these songs that we know the fans love, and bring a different, stripped down vibe. β€˜Better Days’ was the first one to get the treatment, and that really brought all our enthusiasm back and relit the creative fires”.Β

Dante GizziΒ added, β€œIt’s ironic that those feelings of negativity led to something so positive, a celebration of our career up to now. It turned into something great, and “Backstreet Brothers”Β really sums up that unalloyed enthusiasm that has been brought back into the heart of the band”.

This week the band announced their debut album, ‘Congregation’, will be released October 21st. They also released the title track as a single, and you can listen above.

On the single, Amy Walpole said, β€œThis is Alisha’s personal fave! It marks a new step in our development as songwriters as it’s something different from what we’ve done before. We allowed ourselves to experiment with space and dynamics and we love it!”

Walpole says on the album, β€œAs our first album we’re really excited to just get it out there. We feel that it’s a step above what we’ve done before as we had a chance to experiment with sound and structure. It was our first opportunity to explore writing a body of work which was challenging but has been so rewarding!”

She continues, β€œIt pushed our creative process because we also had to think about the songs sitting side by side on an album! We tried to break out of what makes a typical β€˜witch fever’ song whilst still being true to what makes our sound what it is.”

Oakman debut ‘Fantasy’

Oakman – ‘Fantasy’

Fellow ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist alumni Oakman also debuted a new single this week.

Listen to ‘Fantasy’ above, and check out the band on our ‘Discover’ New Music Podcast with the episode dropping on May 23rd!

β€œThe pandemic and the lockdown was a long period of questioning. When you try to realize your dreams, your projects, you put so much energy into it that nothing can stop you,” says the band. β€œBut when everything stops, it’s a hard blow. And this time, it was the whole world that stopped! So you start to question your life, your choices and even think about giving up and you say to yourself, β€˜that would only be proving the people who never believed in you right.’ So when you finally realize that you can’t give up who you are, you start to find a new energy where this time you want to fight even harder to reach your goals because β€˜this time you want it all.’”

News Report

As always we close our our News Report with the latest additions to our ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist!

Eli Hurts – ‘Runts’

Eli Hurts, the project from songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Eli Hirsch (courtship), has released a new single and music video for the song ‘Runts’.

“When I played this riff for the first time I was sure I stole it,” says Eli on the new song. β€œI don’t think I did, but who knows. I love this song. I really wish I wasn’t a runt, and in some areas, I’m not but in many I am. There’s not much to do about it except embrace it. and find other runts. and take over the world. I love you my runts”

Sunsleeper – ‘Currents’

Indie rock outfit Sunsleeper have a new music video for their track ‘Currents’.

β€œThe music video reflects the theme of feeling stuck in a routine. The character grows increasinglyΒ distraught with their mundaneΒ cyclical lifestyle, until a chance encounterΒ helps push them out of their comfort zone,” shares vocalist Jeffery Mudgett.

β€œThe song is about feeling stuck in a cycle that we have no ability to break. Grappling with the fact that life is like currents, forever undulating from crests to troughs. Nothing is linear, especially not existence,” says Mudgett.

Mexican Dogs – ‘When It’s Gone’

‘When It’s Gone’ is the latest offering from rambunctious Liverpool trio Mexican Dogs.

Frontman Gaz Wilcox explains of the track:

β€œβ€When It’s Gone” is about when you think you don’t have enough in life, but then you lose what you had and realise you actually had everything you needed. The track shows a heavier, more alternative side to the band, and this gusty sound goes down well at our live shows. As a band we do try to make each song different from the next β€” it’s important to us as it keeps things fresh and makes writing music exciting.”

Of the track and video Nick Kivlen says,

β€œThis song is a romantic vision of meeting a lover, running away together, and entering a dangerous new world. It’s less safe but also less suffocating. The video follows me through a series of twilight zone-style mishaps as I search to be seen or understood. Things only improve when I finally find like-minded people. Is it a dream? Is it the multiverse? It’s for the viewer to decide.”

Asylums return with new single ‘Crypto Klepto’

Asylums – ‘Crypto Klepto’

This week saw the return of Asylums with their brand new single, ‘Crypto Klepto’, which you can check out above.

Describing their new single, producer Dave Eringa says:

β€œI can honestly say this is one of the most unhinged songs I’ve ever produced & up above 215bpm one of the fastest too!! At that speed it’s genuinely difficult to get it this heavy but the booming tom overdubs & the phalanx of fuzz guitars that annex the second verse get us there I think and the β€œLalala” backing vocals notch the crazy up a level too!! Wild punk rock insanity!!!! Love it!”

Crows share video for ‘Closer Still’

Crows – ‘Closer Still’

We continue our News Report with another band sharing a new video this week was Crows for their new track, ‘Closer Still’. The song is the album opener for latest record, ‘Beware Believers’, and you can watch the video above.

One of several unapologetically political songs on the album, where single James Cox says, β€œβ€˜Closer Still’ was written about the fit-for-work scandals that kept happening where the Department for Work & Pensions were deeming people fit for work when they obviously weren’t able to, taking away what little support they received from the state in an attempt to save on expenditure. It really highlighted our government’s contempt for the vulnerable. People whose daily lives were incredibly difficult.”

New hard rock group Iconic release debut single ‘Nowhere To Run’

Iconic – ‘Nowhere To Run’

New hard rock supergroup Iconic have shared their debut single, ‘Nowhere To Run’, which you can check out above.

The band features Michael Sweet (guitars), Joel Hoekstra (guitars), Marco Mendoza (bass), Tommy Aldridge (drums), and Nathan James (vocals).

“This was a very refreshing and unique experience. Musically, very different from Stryper, which is of course very different from all the other projects I am involved with. This is more of a throwback to the past and it felt good to do that. It reminded me of how great the music of the past really is” says Michael Sweet.

“Once the songs were arranged, IΒ booked a studio and recorded my guitar parts, which is always the funnest part for me. I’m not sure why, but I guess because I’m a guitar player first and foremost and it’s just one of the most creative and fun parts of the process for me. To be able to get the right tone and play the right parts and hear it all come together….it’s very rewarding” he adds.

“The riffs were all very comfortable to me because I wrote most of them.Β πŸ˜€ I definitely have a great comfort level playing with Tommy Aldridge that’s developed over the last 8 years or so with Whitesnake. I’ve also co-written with Nathan, Michael, and Alessandro in the past, so everything felt very natural despite this being a β€œnew” band”Β says Joel Hoekstra.Β

“Michael asked me to write riffs without an arrangement (as he did with George Lynch on the Sweet & Lynch records) and then he arranged them with what he had written. I wrote melodic/hard rock riffs as that was the vibe we had discussed and then all the solo parts had more to do with trying to compliment Nathan’s vocal melodies and of course add a bit of fire” he continues.

FIND OUR PODCASTS ON YOUTUBE

“I am on an album with so many of my heroes and it feels amazing, to be honest. I was lucky enough to be involved in the writing of a couple of songs, but genuinely everything I hear from the guys, I knew I could do it justice. I also feel that the guys wrote stuff that suited my voice perfectly. These are not only great musicians, they are great songwriters.

I practiced the songs a lot beforehand and then I recorded all my vocals at an amazing studio in only four afternoon sessions. I wanted to make sure it sounded like me and that my vocals had the precision that I’m so used to hearing from my vocal heroes, whom many of the guys in the band have played with. And of course, IΒ was very aware that I would be on songs with the vocal master that is Michael Sweet. I felt the pressure for sure, but I just did what I felt worked and I’m so happy with the final result” says Nathan James.

“It was a blast playing some fresh, new material. Rehearsing, trying out parts virtually was not as much fun as doing it live, but considering the global circumstances, Iβ€˜ll take it. I just try to create a supportive environment for all involved while having fun in the process. It was easy to do as these songs really play themselves. It was a true labor of love, so very little work at the end of the day” adds Tommy Aldridge.

The single will feature on debut album, ‘Second Skin’ which arrives June 17th.

As always we conclude our News Report with the latest additions to our ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist, where we highlight the best new music from around the world.

Personal Trainer – ‘Rug Busters’

Amsterdam’s seven-piece Personal Trainer return with joyful new single ‘Rug Busters’

Vocalist Willem Smit says of their new single:

β€œIΒ wanted to make a song to dance to for everybody – no one excluded.Β The idea was to make a song that brings people closer to each other, no matter who they are, who they are with, what theyΒ believe or what they’ve done.Β

“Dance”, “Dance Dance Dance” and “Song 2 Dance 2” were three of the working titles before I settled on “Rug Busters” – “busting a move” meets “cutting a rug” or something.”

Krush Puppies – ‘Throw Me On The Fire’

Krush PuppiesΒ share new single β€˜Throw Me On The Fire’, taken from debut EP ‘Love Kills The Demons’.

Vocalist and guitarist Jenny says on the single, β€œThe song kind of acts as a confessional booth, it asks you to confide your darkest secrets within it, but questions the cost. The chant at the end urges you to face your demons instead of putting them onto someone else’s shoulders.”

Jack Valero – ‘Heaven Help Me’

TheΒ Brighton-based singer-songwriterΒ Jack Valero is back with new single, ‘Heaven Help Me’.

JackΒ says,Β β€œI think every songwriter at the moment has their lockdown song. I suppose this is mine, but it covers far more for me than what the world was going through. It also covers what I was going through personally at the time,Β Β so it all wraps up into one and is presented in a way that can apply to any age and any time. It’s a song for lockdown, it’s a song for me and it’s a song for anyone struggling with the reality of their own existence. I like to be inclusive.”

Crows share new track ‘Garden of England’

Crows – ‘Garden of England’

Crows debuted new single ‘Garden of England’ this week which you can watch the video for above.

The track will feature on new album, ‘Beware Believers’ which is out April 1st!

Singer James Cox explains, “This is straight-up our Brexit anthem. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less which way you voted, your vote, your choice. I just hated how much Brexit had become so ingrained in our day to day life. First thing I’d hear about when I woke up and the last thing I’d read before I went to sleep at night. It became all people spoke about. β€˜Garden of England’ is more of a comment about the divisiveness it caused, splitting families, friends, widening the north-south divide and empowering nationalism. Public figures’ ability to lie publicly and not be held accountable, it’s just dangerous dog-whistle politics that doesn’t belong in the UK.”

An indictment of the so-called American Dream, ‘Roll The Dice’ was written about how many young adults now need side-hustles to secure their futures. The band explains, β€œAlmost everyone we know struggles with money. The traditional routes towards success and stability in America have severely narrowed. The only way to get ahead is to take big risks and roll the dice.”

News Report

As always we finish our News Report with the latest additions to our ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist!

‘BLACK TAR’ – PIT PONY

First up are fuzz-rock five-piece Pit Pony and their new single ‘Black Tar’.

Speaking about the track, singer Jackie Purver explains β€œIt’s quite literally about anxiety, about putting the work in to improve things and going back to the beginning. Feeling like you can’t get anything right and you’ll feel like that forever. The whole track being the same riff throughout, and driven by the constant throbbing bass, really conveys the feeling of that constant cycle. That treadmill you feel like you can’t get off.”

Jackie continues, β€œOf course you do get off, and you can feel better, but it takes time and work. The jagged and garagey sound lends itself to the stark melody and lyrics. It’s not one to overthink. By the end of the song I’m telling myself to snap out of it and keep going.”

‘CAROUSEL’ – REMINDERS

Next is the new single from Isle of Wight indie punks Reminders, ‘Carousel’!

Commenting on the track, front man Leo Dyke says: β€œβ€˜Carousel’ is a song about telling people how you feel and looking for a sense of relief. Nearly everyday we are asked a variation of β€˜how are you?’, and we all say β€˜good’, and that made me think; what sort of chaos would ensue if we were honest? At the time I was desperate to be honest with somebody about how I felt, but I didn’t feel comfortable telling anybody β€˜I need to vent’. This song is all the things I would have said if I felt as though I could have.”

β€œThe genesis of the lyrics comes from a John Lennon song called β€˜Watching the Wheels’, except that song is pretty optimistic. β€˜Carousel’ is its angry step-child. Bottling all of my feelings only led to being pissed off with everybody anyway, and caused me to fall out with the people around me. That’s what the bridge is about: we’re all too insecure to talk about how we feel, while being simultaneously too arrogant to concede, and once a row has gone too far, nobody is willing to stand down or rationalise, when all I was really looking for was someone to talk to.”

‘CIGARETTE SMILE’ – THIS DAZE

Finally this week is the track ‘Cigarette Smile’ from Norwegian indie punks This Daze.

Regarding the single This Daze say, β€œβ€˜Cigarette Smile’ is the colourful person outside the pub with a cig between their lips. The song portrays adolescent themes of distant love together with the figurative and literal fear of meeting each other. The lyric β€œpick me up in your painted life” represents the wish of getting swept up by the romanticised picture you make upon meeting someone for the first time. If this image is flawed or genuine it does not matter for young adults taking chances. This song for us encapsulates the feelings of youth and being young. We feel that both the lyrics, the attitude of our performances and the urgency of the song reflects being young.”
