Enter Shikari share new single ‘Bull’

Enter Shikari – ‘Bull’ feat. Cody Frost

Next, our News Report covers the best new releases from the past week and we begin this week with Enter Shikari.

The group shared new single, ‘Bull’, featuring Cody Frost and you can check out the video above.

Lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds comments: ā€œSome people seem to crop up in your life, do immense damage to it, and then scuttle off again unscathed and unfazed. Whether it’s harassers or bullies, social media trolls, or ill-considered romantic partners, this song is about those who damage your mental health, your self-esteem, and even your very identityā€.

ā€œWe’ve known Cody for years and years now, and consider them a real part of the inner Shikari family. We’ve always known they were a wonderful talent and it’s been great to see them begin to ascend and find their voice.

When I was writing the chorus to Bull I could just immediately hear their voice. It seemed ingrained in the very viscera of the song already. We showed them the track and they came at us with all the passion in the world. Cody has incredible dynamic ability and is able to offer enormous power but with real vulnerability and tenderness never too far away. It was a joy to have them on this one, it all came together so effortlessly and we are all over the moon with the resultā€.

Cody Frost adds: ā€œI can’t tell you how much this collab means to me, and it came at just the right time. I’d been through a hard breakup and lost everything, so when Rory messaged me asking if I wanted to be on a Shikari track, I lost my mind! I’ve been a huge fan of Enter Shikari since I was 15, I even have my favourite track title tattooed on my palms.

When I got the news I sat in my room for hours and the lyrics just poured out, I went into the studio with Dan (Weller), who has worked with me on my own music and some of Shikari’s too, to lay down the vocals while the band listened!

Filming the video was a dream, my favourite musicians serving me pies!!! It was surreal, and the concept was so fun I just know that Shikari fans are gonna dig it.ā€

The Murder Capital share ‘Ethel’

The Murder Capital – ‘Ethel’

The Murder Capital have shared the latest single from their upcoming album, ‘Gigi’s Recovery’, which is out January 20th. Listen to ‘Ethel’ above.

The band share about the new single: ā€œThe song ā€˜Ethel’ is a picture of a crossroads, really, asking you what you want from life. Whether you want to continue down a path of chaos, or make a change in your course. It’s showing you what is possible when you make the decisions that bring a sort of cradled warmth into your future. The idea of ā€˜Ethel’ is that you can have what you truly desire if you put to rest those short-lived fixes that never bring you any real happiness.ā€

The band also share the Maxim Kelly directed video for ‘Ethel’; Kelly shares about the making of the video: ā€œInitially I thought Ethel should be the main character and do the dance at the end, and I always had this image from this French film called ‘My American Uncle’. Where it’s like a little girl standing up at a table. I originally had that image in my head for a rap video, but it didn’t really make sense to the song, I wanted this to feel more like surreal so then as I started finding more imagery, it kind of transpired that maybe the maid was the more interesting character.ā€

Jamie Lenman reveals NHS Charity single ‘Hospital Tree’

Jamie Lenman – ‘Hospital Tree’

Ahead of the release of his fifth solo album, ‘The Athiest’, out November 25th, Jamie Lenman has shared new single ‘Hospital Tree’, which you can listen to above.

Proceeds from the track go towards NHS Charities.

Commenting on the track, Lenman says: ā€œI ended up visiting Frimley Park Hospital, who treated me when I got pneumonia and took care of my Dad when he had cancer, to talk to them about the idea of Christmas in hospital. One lady said she was glad I’d noticed their efforts with things like decorations and such, that cheering the place up around the holidays is important to them, and that one of the things that made the pandemic even harder was that they weren’t able to do as much of that. So it was wonderful that they could hear my message of thanks. I hope they all hear it.ā€

The single comes with a beautifully simplistic video directed by Jen Hingley that echoes the poignant lyrical themes of the song, which sees Lenman flexing his multi-instrumental muscles on a piano ballad in yet another impressive chameleonic turn.

ā€œMy original idea had been to get hold a huge choir and have everyone singing away in this whole epic production,ā€Ā says Lenman of the visuals,Ā ā€œbut I just couldn’t get it together so we ended up going the other way—just me and a piano in a beautiful old village hall, really concentrating on the song and, of course, the tree.ā€

James And The Cold Gun debut ‘Chewing Glass’

James And The Cold Gun – ‘Chewing Glass’

Earlier this year James And The Cold Gun released debut EP, ‘False Start’. Now the ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist alumni will start to build towards their full debut album with new single, ‘Chewing Glass’, which you can listen to above.

Frontman James Joseph had the following to say about the themes behind their new single:

“Chewing Glass” was written during a time where I felt like I couldn’t catch a break. The verses are a conversation with myself in the mirror at a low point where I’m re-evaluating all of my decisions – in essence, it’s a song about being down on your luck but persisting anyway. It’s our first self-produced song, which in itself was an act of persistence, but we’re super happy with the result.”

STAY FREE – ‘Future Self’

The former Boy Jumps Ship return as STAY FREE and share their new single, ‘Future Self’.

The band had the following to say:

ā€œWe’re so excited to release new music, it’s by far the most exciting thing we have ever been a part of as musicians, and we’re excited to get it out there and release new tunes consistently. Working with Jason was a blast, it’s the most fun we have ever had in the studio.ā€

Lux Lyall – ‘Draw Blood’

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and poet Lux Lyall has released her brand new single, ‘Draw Blood’.

Regarding the new single Lux says, ā€œā€˜Draw Blood’ is actually about multiple things. A few years ago I was finally open with my therapist about an assault that happened while I was dating someone when I was younger; I was pretty closed about it after it happened because I actually felt guilty for staying in the relationship afterwards. Now I know I basically shut the whole thing out because I didn’t want to face it, it’s still hard to talk about.

ā€œReflecting on that a few years ago while in another romantic situation that made me feel stifled, I wrote the chorus about being angry at what I’d put up with, and what a lot of my friends were still putting up with in abusive situations. The verses are more about how trapped I felt at the time.

ā€œI was watching a few of my guy friends going on tour and I was happy for them and envious at the same time. I kept thinking about the concept of ā€œbeing with the bandā€ and how I’d been that way when I was young and all it did was give me trauma! I’m trying to say I don’t want to be with the band anymore I want to BE the band.ā€

Adult Leisure – ‘Control’

Bristol-based alt-indie four-piece Adult Leisure release new single, ‘Control’, taken from upcoming debut EP, ‘The Weekend Ritual’.

Reflecting on the EP, the band state, ā€œwe’ve always wanted to produce an honest and homegrown debut selection of songs which both showcases our ability as musicians, but also keeps in line with our honest grass roots style. We wanted people to hear us with no filter or 3rd party influence. In an industry where so much is insincere, we wanted to give people us and us alone.ā€

Speaking about the inspiration behind the single the band state, ā€œControl focuses around an immeasurable love to which it’s clear the object of affection isn’t the wisest choice, yet still the lover is drawn ever closer, due to the overwhelming presence the recipient of their adoration has within their life.

They are the drug they can’t seem to pry themselves away from. They are hell, yet they are home and this is the battle the lover is having with themselves.ā€

Black Star Riders debut ‘Pay Dirt’

Black Star Riders – ‘Pay Dirt’

This week Black Star Riders shared the latest look at new album, ‘Wrong Side Of Paradise’, which is out January 20th. You can check out new single, ‘Pay Dirt’, above.

Frontman Ricky Warwick comments: ā€œRock’n’Roll is my lover, friend, enemy, ally, religion and saviour. Rock’n’Roll is my life. Christian Martucci and the late Todd Youth wrote the music for this. And when I heard it, it stank with defiance and attitude. It didn’t need changing, just some words to echo the power of the chords. It’s an ode to Rock’n’Roll… But also a dig at those that don’t learn their art and don’t play from the heart!ā€

About the album Ricky adds: ā€œI am very proud of this record, Black Star Riders’ fifth release and the first with our new and exciting relationship with Earache Records. As with all BSR albums, ā€˜Wrong Side Of Paradise’ is an anthemic statement of intent,  driven by ferocious guitars and thundering drums. I can only write about my own personal experiences, my families, my friends and how I see a world that is unraveling and changing faster than we can comprehend. That being said, I’m a firm believer in the power of positivity, something that echoes throughout this albumā€

In addition to the new record, Black Star Riders will embark on their 10th Anniversary tour, starting from 13th February 2023.

Ricky Warwick further comments: ā€œCan you believe 2023 is 10 years of Black Star Riders? … How time flies while you are having fun!  We decided to do something special to commemorate this occasion. For the UK tour only, to coincide with the album’s release, we will be bringing back the legendary Scott Gorham (guitar) and Jimmy DeGrasso (drums) for the dates to make them extra special!ā€

The Cult debut ‘A Cut Inside’

The Cult – ‘A Cut Inside’

Our News Report continues with the latest single from The Cult, ‘A Cut Inside’, which you can listen to above.

The track comes from new album, ‘Under The Midnight Sun’, which is out on October 7th.

Leading to 2020, The Cult had been on a rolling cycle of releasing albums, touring, and recording. As the world shut down and everyone was forced to reprioritiseĀ the way they approached life and work.Ā ā€œWhen the world stopped, I had this moment to write in real time, to calculate,ā€Ā says Ian Astbury.

When lockdown lifted and the group could meet to record, they teamed up with Dalgety.Ā ā€œI was compelled by this vision, this anomaly, this memory, of being under the midnight sun. Tom helped us bring a new musical shape and frequency to our process.ā€

Pixies share new track ‘Dregs of the Wine’

Pixies – ‘Dregs of the Wine’

Pixies up next in our News Report as they shared new track, ‘Dregs of the Wine’, this week, which you can listen to above.

The track comes from upcoming new album, ‘Doggerel’, which is out September 30th.

Black Francis says the song is about, ā€œLiving in Los Angeles in the ā€˜90s with my then-wife, hanging out with Joey and his ex-wife, lots of trips to Las Vegas, a lot of drinking, little bit drug taking, some genuine good times.ā€

Flashforward to the present day. Joey Santiago was jamming at home on his guitar and the initial idea behind the song may well have been lost to the moment.

He recalls, ā€œI guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing. After I stopped playing I put it down and went, ā€˜Well, that was a fucking waste of time, what a piece of shit I am.’ I beat myself up a lot, but my girlfriend, unbeknownst to me, was recording me. She played it back to me and I go, ā€˜Fuck! Hold on a second here! This stuff is good!ā€™ā€

The duo of Adrian Smith and Richie Kotzen will release ‘Better Days… And Nights’ on September 16th.

This week they shared the live video for ‘Got A Hold On Me’, which you can check out above.

Adrian Smith comments, ā€œI think everyone in the band was extremely happy with how our very first tour turned out. We were all naturally a little anxious as we’d never played live together before but once we got out there, everything fell into place really easily and we all had a tremendous amount of fun. I can’t wait until we can do it again and get to play in many more places next time round.ā€

Richie Kotzen adds, ā€œWe spent a lot of time discussing which of the songs from the live show to include on this CD. We wanted to capture an accurate snapshot of the special vibe we all felt on the tour and I think we’ve achieved this in the songs we’ve selected, and hope our fans will agree. We’re looking forward to seeing everybody again on future tours.ā€

Singer Paul Smith comments on the song:

ā€œMerging Into You’s organ sound reminds me of some of our early songs, which ended up on the flipside of our first singles. The song is a romanticĀ look at the first, tentative moments of a relationship, enhanced by Du Blonde’s brilliant voice. We’re all fans of Beth’s music and she added a different texture to ourĀ sound, along with Faye MacCalman’sĀ swooning sax that carries the song to its close.ā€

We hope you enjoy this EP and we hope you can feel the sincerity of the emotions we wanted to share with you. Soon, this EP will belong to you.ā€

About the song, the band says, ā€œMarine was watching a show during lockdown called “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”. The main character reminded her of a character she had played when she was doing theater. After the foundation of ā€˜SCP’ was written, she wrote the lyrics about these two characters. ā€˜SCP’ is a sarcastic and second degree track about the fear of loneliness and not being loved at all costs with a neurotic side.ā€

Grave Goods – ‘Die’

Grave Goods share the song ‘Die’ from their debut album, ‘Tuesday. Nothing Exists’, out now!

Speaking of the single, drummer Sarah Grimes said, ā€œLois sent us the idea for DIE as a sort of electronic track, and when we were all together we worked out how to make it into a live band sound and add our own stamp to it. Whilst recording at Invada we felt that the build up towards the end of DIE needed more layers, so Lois and Phil tried out a couple of synths and settled on a sound that worked – it’s the only song that has synth.

During the last 15 minutes of our recording time Phil added extra layers by messing around with some guitar feedback – the final sound to be recorded on the album, which is kind of special when you think about it especially as DIE is the closing track of the album.ā€

Harpy – ‘Medicine’

Harpy is back to share her brand new single, ‘Medicine’!

ā€œSometimes we don’t want to be saved. Sometimes we want to feel the pain, to revel in the misery. We do things that are bad for us, because sometimes they feel good… so good that we go back to them again, and again, and again. That’s what Medicine is about.” – Harpy

Creature Cult – ‘ughly’

Creature Cult are a duo from Colchester, Essex consisting of Connar Ridd (vocals/guitar) and Jonn Downham (synths/backing vocals). The present their latest single, ‘ughly’.

Explaining the track further, Connar said, ā€œI had to leave a job recently because I was told I didn’t dress the way they wanted me to when I was dressed perfectly fine. If someone without piercings and tattoos and bleached hair would have worn the same thing I doubt there would have been an issue. I’m bored of being made to feel like an alien for just trying to be who I am, this song is exactly about it. It’s about paranoia to leave the f*cking house because you’re thinking about what homophobic comment someone is gunna say when you’re queuing in the corner shop. About feeling exhausted to be yourself because people try and make it hard for you to be. But there is a community for people who stick together and stand tall, a community where difference is celebrated and we are all ā€˜freaks’ together, and this song is a f*ck you to the people who try to take that away.ā€

Jonn adds, ā€œI was recently sitting at a bus stop and had a group of guys hurling the foulest homophobic comments at me simply because I was wearing makeup and dressed in a faux-fur coat. It’s both crazy and sad that there are people who still have these sorts of views towards others simply for being or looking different to what’s considered ‘normal’. It’s not okayā€

Vocalist Gala shared, ā€œā€™Black Thunder’ is the crown jewel of our second album. The music video is split into two parts and conveys the core values of men through visuals. Our producer Dashka chose a unique location in Mongolia to shoot the video, where we had a great time riding the horses in the vast grassland of our countryside. We hope that our pride in our culture shines through, as we aimed to bring viewers joy and a piece of our culture through this video.ā€

Speaking on their next studio album, he continued, ā€œOur second album will include ā€˜Black Thunder’, along with many new songs. We can’t wait for you to listen and enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it.ā€

News Report

As always we conclude our News Report with the latest additions to our ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist!

The Native – ’20 Something’

The NativeĀ share their brand new singleĀ ā€˜20 Something’.

FrontmanĀ Charlie Noordewier says,Ā “This song is about a person who is ruining their life with addiction. It started as self medicating at weekends trying to escape from their job and slowly declined into more drink and drugs. They’re working a hard job all week and then blowing all their cash at the weekend to distract themselves from their unhappiness – rather than escaping from the rut they have created.”

Jack Valero – ‘Hollow Warmth’

Jack Valero has shared his second single, ‘Hollow Warmth’.

Jack says, ā€œThis continues the abstract motifs of the previous video with a little bleak humour added in. It’s supposed to be a classic breakup narrative, but with a dark twist that can be interpreted in many different ways.

We touch on the ideas of isolation again, but this time dive more into the sometimes dark privacy of a person. It can be taken metaphorically or literally, but either way it should make you feel like you’re getting a peek into someone’s very private world and maybe make you feel a little uncomfortable.ā€

Humour – ‘yeah, mud!’

Humour share their debut single, ‘yeah, mud!’, an early live favourite, with the band saying the following on the themes behind the track:

This song was one that just came to us. I think it came together in less than an hour and everything just seemed to fit first time. A lot of the lyrics are inspired by an old book Andreas read. In this book a soldier realises he’s about to die and writes his mother a note.

I think it’s interesting to think about what you might have to say if you realised you were going to die in a few minutes, and what you’d then say to your mother. Lots of pressure to come up with something important.”
