BLOC PARTY – ANATOMY OF A BRIEF ROMANCE – Album review
Four years on from ‘Alpha Games’, Bloc Party are back with their latest album, ‘Anatomy of a Brief Romance’.
As is the trend of the day, this is a concept album looking at the break-up of a long relationship and early days of a new romance.
It does feel like this album is frontman Kele Okereke working through some things in a very public way. This adds a layer to the album which is both absorbing but also off-putting. The concept almost overshadowing the music.

Sonically, the pace is very slow and never gets your pulse racing. Sadly, the intriguing lyrical content is unable to truly cut through the mundane and bland sound of the album.
This isn’t helped by the fact that the album is forty-nine minutes long. With attention spans ever decreasing, this does just present a real hard slog. This is a shame because there is enough on here to make you want to like it.
We know that Bloc Party can be one of the most dynamic and exciting bands on the planet, but this album isn’t that. It serves a purpose, but it certainly won’t achieve the acclaim of other recent concept albums.
