Enter Shikari share new single ‘Bull’

Enter Shikari – ‘Bull’ feat. Cody Frost

Next, our News Report covers the best new releases from the past week and we begin this week with Enter Shikari.

The group shared new single, ‘Bull’, featuring Cody Frost and you can check out the video above.

Lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds comments: ā€œSome people seem to crop up in your life, do immense damage to it, and then scuttle off again unscathed and unfazed. Whether itā€™s harassers or bullies, social media trolls, or ill-considered romantic partners, this song is about those who damage your mental health, your self-esteem, and even your very identityā€.

ā€œWeā€™ve known Cody for years and years now, and consider them a real part of the inner Shikari family. Weā€™ve always known they were a wonderful talent and itā€™s been great to see them begin to ascend and find their voice.

When I was writing the chorus to Bull I could just immediately hear their voice. It seemed ingrained in the very viscera of the song already. We showed them the track and they came at us with all the passion in the world. Cody has incredible dynamic ability and is able to offer enormous power but with real vulnerability and tenderness never too far away. It was a joy to have them on this one, it all came together so effortlessly and we are all over the moon with the resultā€.

Cody Frost adds: ā€œI canā€™t tell you how much this collab means to me, and it came at just the right time. Iā€™d been through a hard breakup and lost everything, so when Rory messaged me asking if I wanted to be on a Shikari track, I lost my mind! Iā€™ve been a huge fan of Enter Shikari since I was 15, I even have my favourite track title tattooed on my palms.

When I got the news I sat in my room for hours and the lyrics just poured out, I went into the studio with Dan (Weller), who has worked with me on my own music and some of Shikariā€™s too, to lay down the vocals while the band listened!

Filming the video was a dream, my favourite musicians serving me pies!!! It was surreal, and the concept was so fun I just know that Shikari fans are gonna dig it.ā€

The Murder Capital share ‘Ethel’

The Murder Capital – ‘Ethel’

The Murder Capital have shared the latest single from their upcoming album, ‘Gigi’s Recovery’, which is out January 20th. Listen to ‘Ethel’ above.

The band share about the new single: ā€œThe song ā€˜Ethelā€™ is a picture of a crossroads, really, asking you what you want from life. Whether you want to continue down a path of chaos, or make a change in your course. Itā€™s showing you what is possible when you make the decisions that bring a sort of cradled warmth into your future. The idea of ā€˜Ethelā€™ is that you can have what you truly desire if you put to rest those short-lived fixes that never bring you any real happiness.ā€

The band also share the Maxim Kelly directed video for ‘Ethel’; Kelly shares about the making of the video: ā€œInitially I thought Ethel should be the main character and do the dance at the end, and I always had this image from this French film called ‘My American Uncle’. Where itā€™s like a little girl standing up at a table. I originally had that image in my head for a rap video, but it didnā€™t really make sense to the song, I wanted this to feel more like surreal so then as I started finding more imagery, it kind of transpired that maybe the maid was the more interesting character.ā€

Jamie Lenman reveals NHS Charity single ‘Hospital Tree’

Jamie Lenman – ‘Hospital Tree’

Ahead of the release of his fifth solo album, ‘The Athiest’, out November 25th, Jamie Lenman has shared new single ‘Hospital Tree’, which you can listen to above.

Proceeds from the track go towards NHS Charities.

Commenting on the track, Lenman says: ā€œI ended up visiting Frimley Park Hospital, who treated me when I got pneumonia and took care of my Dad when he had cancer, to talk to them about the idea of Christmas in hospital. One lady said she was glad I’d noticed their efforts with things like decorations and such, that cheering the place up around the holidays is important to them, and that one of the things that made the pandemic even harder was that they weren’t able to do as much of that. So it was wonderful that they could hear my message of thanks. I hope they all hear it.ā€

The single comes with a beautifully simplistic video directed by Jen Hingley that echoes the poignant lyrical themes of the song, which sees Lenman flexing his multi-instrumental muscles on a piano ballad in yet another impressive chameleonic turn.

ā€œMy original idea had been to get hold a huge choir and have everyone singing away in this whole epic production,ā€Ā says Lenman of the visuals,Ā ā€œbut I just couldn’t get it together so we ended up going the other wayā€”just me and a piano in a beautiful old village hall, really concentrating on the song and, of course, the tree.ā€

James And The Cold Gun debut ‘Chewing Glass’

James And The Cold Gun – ‘Chewing Glass’

Earlier this year James And The Cold Gun released debut EP, ‘False Start’. Now the ‘Discover’ New Music Playlist alumni will start to build towards their full debut album with new single, ‘Chewing Glass’, which you can listen to above.

Frontman James Joseph had the following to say about the themes behind their new single:

“Chewing Glass” was written during a time where I felt like I couldn’t catch a break. The verses are a conversation with myself in the mirror at a low point where I’m re-evaluating all of my decisions – in essence, it’s a song about being down on your luck but persisting anyway. It’s our first self-produced song, which in itself was an act of persistence, but we’re super happy with the result.”

STAY FREE – ‘Future Self’

The former Boy Jumps Ship return as STAY FREE and share their new single, ‘Future Self’.

The band had the following to say:

ā€œWeā€™re so excited to release new music, it’s by far the most exciting thing we have ever been a part of as musicians, and weā€™re excited to get it out there and release new tunes consistently. Working with Jason was a blast, itā€™s the most fun we have ever had in the studio.ā€

Lux Lyall – ‘Draw Blood’

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and poet Lux Lyall has released her brand new single, ‘Draw Blood’.

Regarding the new single Lux says, ā€œā€˜Draw Bloodā€™ is actually about multiple things. A few years ago I was finally open with my therapist about an assault that happened while I was dating someone when I was younger; I was pretty closed about it after it happened because I actually felt guilty for staying in the relationship afterwards. Now I know I basically shut the whole thing out because I didnā€™t want to face it, itā€™s still hard to talk about.

ā€œReflecting on that a few years ago while in another romantic situation that made me feel stifled, I wrote the chorus about being angry at what Iā€™d put up with, and what a lot of my friends were still putting up with in abusive situations. The verses are more about how trapped I felt at the time.

ā€œI was watching a few of my guy friends going on tour and I was happy for them and envious at the same time. I kept thinking about the concept of ā€œbeing with the bandā€ and how Iā€™d been that way when I was young and all it did was give me trauma! Iā€™m trying to say I donā€™t want to be with the band anymore I want to BE the band.ā€

Adult Leisure – ‘Control’

Bristol-based alt-indie four-piece Adult Leisure release new single, ‘Control’, taken from upcoming debut EP, ‘The Weekend Ritual’.

Reflecting on the EP, the band state, ā€œweā€™ve always wanted to produce an honest and homegrown debut selection of songs which both showcases our ability as musicians, but also keeps in line with our honest grass roots style. We wanted people to hear us with no filter or 3rd party influence. In an industry where so much is insincere, we wanted to give people us and us alone.ā€

Speaking about the inspiration behind the single the band state, ā€œControl focuses around an immeasurable love to which itā€™s clear the object of affection isnā€™t the wisest choice, yet still the lover is drawn ever closer, due to the overwhelming presence the recipient of their adoration has within their life.

They are the drug they can’t seem to pry themselves away from. They are hell, yet they are home and this is the battle the lover is having with themselves.ā€

Rival Sons debut ‘Nobody Wants To Die’

Rival Sons – ‘Nobody Wants To Die’

This week saw Rival Sons return with news that they will be releasing a new album, ‘Darkfighter’ on March 10th.

The group also debuted their brand new single, ‘Nobody Wants To Die’, which you can listen to above.

Regarding ‘Nobody Wants to Die’, vocalist Jay Buchanan shares, ā€œYou live your life knowing that the sword of Damocles is hanging over your head by a thread. Youā€™re fully aware of the impermanence of your existence, but you canā€™t think about it all the timeā€”or itā€™ll fuck your life up.

I used to work in a mortuary as a service advisor for a few years, driving and opening the hearses. Iā€™d attend three funerals per day. Sometimes, they would be filled over capacity. Other times, it would just be me, a priest, and a hole in the ground. It doesnā€™t matter who you are; the great equalizer is coming. I was thinking of this because the music sounded like pursuit.ā€

Elaborating on the genesis of ‘Darkfighter’, Buchanan notes, ā€œ’Darkfighter’ represents the cultural mitosis of isolation, the Pandemic, and the national fabric of the US getting looser and looser. When I say ā€˜Cultural Mitosisā€™, there are lines being drawn constantly. Weā€™re so divided, and you canā€™t step over the lines without offending someone. It certainly informed my writing.

We recognized a responsibility to put a good word on peopleā€™s ears so thereā€™s a good word coming back on their tongues too. We missed the joy of the live show and that magical interaction. When it was taken from us, that made me want to sing about topics that were important. There are strong themes on this record of loss of identity, preservation of joy, and beholding light and shape again.ā€

Lead guitarist Scott Holiday added, ā€œRecords are a healthy form of escapism. I hope this one takes you as far away as possible. Our intent was to create a cinematic body of work. As soon as the doors shut behind you, youā€™re enveloped on the ride. This is the sound of us really coming into our own. Weā€™ve gotten further from our influences and gotten closer to what we are. ‘Darkfighter’ sounds like the Rival Sons.ā€

Tigercub share ‘The Perfume of Decay’

Tigercub – ‘The Perfume of Decay’

This week saw Tigercub return with their new single, ‘The Perfume of Decay’, which you can listen to above.

The track marks Tigercubā€™s debut release for Loosegroove Records, the label co-founded by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, a longtime champion of the band.

ā€œThey say comparison is the thief of joy,ā€ says Tigercubā€™s 7-foot frontman Jamie Hall, ā€œand nowhere is this more acutely felt than on the internet; the public ledger where I must amend my social cv daily, to portray my life to others in the most rose tinted & ineffable way possible. The reality couldnā€™t be further from the truth of course, beneath this facade I am crumbling, cascading into despair and at odds with my emotions. ā€˜The Perfume of Decayā€™ is my expression of this feeling, an argument between affectation and naturalness. It marks the beginning of a new era for us ā€“ this is Tigercub at its heaviest, its most accomplished, and most unapologetic.ā€

ā€œJamie Hall is not only an incredible songwriter, singer, and fucking wicked guitarist,ā€ says Stone Gossard, ā€œbut he also has a deep understanding of art and music history. This guy dabbles in it all ā€” visual arts, digital media, world history. This band is generational, and Jamieā€™s a natural star. Loosegroove couldnā€™t be happier working with Tigercub.ā€

ā€œItā€™s all about opposites,ā€ Jamie Hall says. ā€œSweet-and-salty popcorn tends to taste better than regular popcorn, even though those are two opposing forces. I wanted to nail that concept with our heavy guitars, softer-sung vocals, Can-style grooves, and a bit of shoegaze. Counterpoints can come together and make a powerful connection. Iā€™ve crossed the threshold from my 20s to my 30s, so Iā€™m getting older, but Iā€™m also entering my prime. This record is a reflection of that.ā€

Pulled Apart By Horses share video for ‘Rinse & Repeat’

Pulled Apart By Horses – ‘Rinse & Repeat’

Pulled Apart By Horses this week shared the video for their single, ‘Rinse & Repeat’, which you can watch above. The track comes from new album, ‘Reality Cheques’, which is out now!

Commenting on the track, vocalist Tom Hudson says the single is ā€œan ode to all that have found themselves trapped in the darker corners of the music industry. The repetitive whirring of the machine. A spanner in the works of the daily grind. A helping hand to break out of a vicious cycle. The realisation that they need you more than you need them. Inspired by seeing Ziggy Stardust stood in line at the jobcentre. More punk rock than Iggy advertising life insurance.ā€

Witch Fever debut ‘Beauty and Grace’

Witch Fever – ‘Beauty and Grace’

There was also more new music this week from Witch Fever. The group debuted new single, ‘Beauty and Grace’, which you can check out above.

The track features on debut album, ‘Congregation’, which is out October 21st.

Singer Amy Walpole says of the track, ā€œā€˜Beauty and Graceā€™ ended up being the dark horse of the record! Before we went into the studio it wasnā€™t one of our faves but Sam really brought it out of its shell! The song is about pushing back against oppressive feminine beauty standards whilst also finding a place for femininity that you enjoy and makes you feel powerful !! Femininity is not a weakness, as much as society may tell you it is! If it empowers you and brings you joy itā€™s a strength!ā€

Other Half – ‘Slab Thick’

Norwich-based post-hardcore outfit Other Half have debuted new track ‘Slab Thick’.

Commenting on the video, the band say: ā€œBSM wanted a high-concept, high-production pop video to help shift some serious units so we wrangled the few dogs we know and the one cat we own to produce three and a half minutes of visual magic.ā€

ā€œWe like doing everything ourselves; for DIY punk kudos and because weā€™re tight and awkward, so it was fun figuring out how to make it look like weā€™re all playing in a room together even when one of us was filming the whole time.”

ā€œFor the second part of the video we had next to nothing and were filming some pretty shudder-inducing stuff in the local park when our friendā€™s Roya and Charlie walked past with their dogs; Daisy and Lily. Never one to miss a free opportunity for content, we scooped those dogs up, spun around a bit and sung at the camera. Rinse, repeat and the rest is history. Thanks to all the nice animals that starred alongside us.ā€

IOTA – ‘Ballet Box’

‘Ballet Box’, the latest single from Bristol-based rock five-piece IOTA is out now.

Explaining the inspiration behind the single, vocalist and lyricist Jodie Robinson explains, ā€œIts about a ballerina inside of a jewellery box coming to life as the box closes. Inspired by the thought of the ā€˜objectā€™ coming to life and how they’d never know what it was like to be outside of that box and nobody would ever know that they were alive. There was a play on the element of control and feeling trapped, fighting with that part of your mind. Itā€™s very much a song about ā€˜Is there more to life and can we fulfil that void’.”

Blue Violet – ‘Favourite Jeans’

Blue Violet follow up debut album with new single, ‘Favourite Jeans’.

ā€œFor all of the chaos and hardships that Covid brought to the world it also provide ample time for people to be creativeā€ reflects singer Sarah Gotley of the ā€˜Love, Hate & Forgivenessā€™ EP. ā€œSo although we only released our debut album in April this year we wanted to bring out some of the music that we’d been working on in that timeā€.
