The church in this case is the venue, the sermon is the song and the preacher the artist. When we started writing I threw the idea in the hat at the last minute, picked up a guitar to try and put music to the melody in my head for the first time, and Childhood Eyes was born. This is a song about being defeating, let down, and deceived time and again, but still managing to find your creative soul and carry on. What they mean, I canā€™t say, but sometimes if you look hard enough and sit quietly enough, life reaches out and speaks to you.ā€

MartinĆ© – ‘Oxytocin’

Copenhagen’s MartinĆ© shares debut single, ‘Oxytocin’.

ā€œMy inspiration for this song was the very powerful hormone Oxytocin, which is also released when falling in love or by physical touch. SLEEP TOKEN – TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN – ALBUM REVIEW

The hype around Sleep Token is interesting. Theyā€™ve been around for some seven or so years now, and already have two EPā€™s and two albums to their name ahead of their third full-length ā€˜Take Me Back To Edenā€™. Their success then shouldnā€™t be considered to be ā€œovernightā€. That said, the hype train has certainly picked up speed over the last year, perhaps influenced by a certain social media app.

Mystery still surrounds the group both naturally and by design; and whilst many are jumping on the bandwagon, there are also those that are out to shoot the band down. A somewhat polarising start to life then for the band, and thatā€™s rather fitting listening to this new trilogy closing album.

It smacks of an album that will split fans and critics alike by its very grandiose nature. For some it will be an epic masterpiece that should be revered for its ambition. Alas for others it will be deemed a bloated, over-produced, self-indulgent slog of an album.

Watch ‘Take me back to eden’ on youtube
Sleep Token – ‘Take Me Back To Eden’

Find Full Pelt Music on YouTube

The truth, is probably somewhere in between the two, but definitely skewed towards the former. The ambition in making a heavy yet accessible, atmospheric yet colossal sound come to life has to be admired.

The great moments on this album are truly phenomenal, and there is so much to dissect across the hour plus, twelve song collection of sonic reverence. Multiple listens will be essential to fully grasp this offering from Sleep Token.

That said, the fact that a large part of their audience has arrived from a social media app centred on short length clips is interesting. Will this following connect with the likes of the eight minute epic title-track?

As always with Sleep Token, you may feel that there are more questions than answers on this album. But then, after all isnā€™t that a large part of the appeal? One thing is certain and thatā€™s wherever they go next, the world will be watching!

Next in our News Report is K.Flay who this week released her latest single, ‘Raw Raw’, which you can check out above.

Regarding the single K.Flay says,Ā ā€œā€˜Raw Rawā€™ is the start of my next chapter. After losing half my hearing last fall, I was faced with a sudden and intense episode of fear and vulnerability. Like, could I even make music again? Once I got into my recovery and started writing and recording, I knew that I could. And what I wanted to create was music that felt properly rock but also properly future oriented. Uninhibited and different.

ā€œWith ā€˜Raw Rawā€™ I wanted to capture what vulnerability really feels like. Outwardly it might seem tender, but on the inside itā€™s messy and bloody and somewhat terrifying. Itā€™s a chainsaw buzzing at your throat.ā€

Oxymorrons – ‘Last Call’

New York-based punk band Oxymorrons continue their genre-bending revolution with their latest single, ‘Last Call’ featuring Troi Irons.

When asked what inspired them to write such an honest song and share themselves so openly, the band explained, ā€œā€˜Last Callā€™ is an exercise in vulnerability and using our music to help us better understand ourselves and our coping mechanisms. Too many times weā€™ve all found ourselves drowning at the bottom of a bottle, using alcohol to help us feel something different or feel nothing at all. Whether youā€™ve struggled in the past or are struggling right now, we hope this song helps you feel seen and plays a role in helping you not struggle in the future.ā€
Ā
Featured artist Troi Irons brought a different perspective to the track, sharing, ā€œIā€™ve long been a fan of the Oxymorrons and what they do so I was thrilled to hop on this song. I donā€™t really drink but itā€™s more a metaphor for how humans tend to reach for the closest thing to help us feel less alone. Itā€™s not always healthy. Hopefully people reach for the music to feel less alone with this one.ā€

DETHRXNER – ‘STAY COLD’

Copenhagen’s DETHRXNER share their new single, ‘STAY COLD’ featuring Aaron Matts of ten56..

“ā€˜Stay Coldā€™Ā  is a track about resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges. The lyrics convey a determination to stick to one’s plan, despite past failures and missed opportunities – itā€™s ultimately a declaration of staying strong, staying true to oneself, and staying focused on success, no matter how tough the journey may beā€Ā  – Vocalist Neema RadĀ

Support for the tour will come from Ash Kenazi.

The band also had more new music on offer with new single, ‘Orbit’, which you can check out below.

Dream Wife – ‘Orbit’

On the single the band explain, ā€œWritten through the joy of jamming together and locking into the groove like a multi limbed space age organism, Orbit has a dance rock edge from the early noughties of bands like New Young Pony Club and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Lyrically, it was inspired by post-lockdown London coming back to life and sharing a space through friendship and community. And how each day you never know whatā€™s in store for you or how a stranger can become someone close to you – for a day, a heartbeat, a phase, or a lifetime.ā€

On the album, ā€œThis is what I thought we sounded like all along,ā€ Shelton laughs. ā€œItā€™s always felt like a melody-forward band to me, but I think now weā€™re finally achieving what I was always setting out to do.ā€

Lambrini Girls – ‘Lads Lads Lads’

With just a month to go until their debut EP ‘Youā€™re Welcome’, out 19th May, Lambrini Girls share new single ā€˜Lads Lads Ladsā€™ about toxic masculinity.

“In order to be a lad, make sure to follow the following guidelines: excessive drinking, harassing anyone with a pulse and starting fights. Most importantly, make sure to never talk about your feelings as this simply cannot be associated with manliness. Lad culture is the shit stain on the bathroom floor and toxic masculinity is the toilet paper that refuses to unstick from the shoe of society. Nobody wins.” says the band.

headcage – ‘false gold’

Alternative Post-Hardcore band headcage have shared their brand new single ā€˜false goldā€™.

ā€œWith this track Iā€™m trying to lay down the premise of always wanting more from life, as in wealth, status or fame but ultimately realising the people and culture that those things predominantly exist in are not the world I come from or identify with in any way, shape or form. To put it simply, it’s something Iā€™ve always wanted for so long, and is also something I hateā€. – Vocalist, Leyum Pattinson.

Recently signed to UNFD, get yourselves acquainted with Grove Street via recent single, ā€˜Lessons of the Pastā€™!

ā€œGrove Street becoming a part of UNFD felt like it was meant to happen,ā€ says guitarist Sandy. ā€œA label that fully believes in us and wants to nurture our growth as a band is a rare thing to be seen. This band started out as fun between friends, we never had any expectations of reaching the levels we have and with UNFD behind us we can push those levels even further.ā€

Speaking of the track, the band share, ā€œLessons of the Past focuses on police brutality, abuse of power, systemic oppression and racism. People not taking a stand against these things only encourages them to manifest further, and we as people must do better to hold those in power accountable.”

snake eyes debut ‘no one is truly cool’

snake eyes ‘no one is truly cool’

Brighton’s snake eyes have shared new single, ‘no one is truly cool’, and you can check out the video above.

Commenting on the new single, vocalist Jim Heffy says: “I met a bloke in a band I like at a festival after separately having a really lovely chat with one of their bandmates. he was stand-offish and, to be honest, a bit of a prick, giving proper ā€˜too cool for schoolā€™ vibes. the whole exchange left a bad taste in my mouth.ā€

ā€œthe fake cool guy thing can only go so far. no need for a fake personality. just be real, be yaself. even Keith Richards puts down the whiskey and cigs sometimes and watches ā€˜the last of usā€™ in his pants with a bowl of nik naks like everyone else.ā€

The official video for the track was created by the bandā€™s drummer and visual director Thomas Coe-Brooker, who explains of the concept: “in keeping with the song, we thought it’d be fun to make a really cool looking video in the least cool of spaces – a family garage. kinda like when you’re having band practice as a teenager and you’re all really sending it like total bad asses…but ultimately, your mum’s seconds from bursting in to tell you it’s too loud and that your dinner’s ready. that, but with satisfying, nicely framed angles and dreamy in-camera long exposure, 90s style.”

Hell’s Ditch – ‘Ghosts’

Hell’s Ditch have shared new single, ‘Ghosts’, ahead of their debut EP, ‘Take Cover’, out March 23rd.

Vocalist Nick Davis explains: “Ghosts is about the hanging weight of the past, the present and the future. Capitalism puts a premium on individual success, which leads people to feel like their failing if they don’t achieve certain goals or milestones. It’s all too easy to plant trees, grow them, and then cut them down inside the confines of your own head. I wrote most of the lyrics while watching my cats seemingly stare at nothing on the ceiling”.

Alternative artist paradise fell has shared their debut offering ā€˜VICES.ā€™.

ā€œVICES. is a frantic confrontation of the irony; that something which kills us slowly, sets us free in the moment. It makes us feel alive. The bad habits we have are the only things that can save us from the drudgery of daily life. The very things that are killing us, become a cornerstone of our identity. They become familiar. They become part of who we are. A comfort in a chaotic world.ā€ – paradise fell.

Iron Maiden get Royal Mail stamp of approval

News Report

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to another edition of our weekly music News Report!

We start this week with the news this week that the Royal Mail have commissioned 12 new Special Stamps celebrating the legendary Iron Maiden.

Maiden become only the fifth music group to feature in a dedicated stamp issue following in the footsteps of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen and The Rolling Stone – illustrious company indeed.

Iron Maiden founder member and bassist, Steve Harris comments:ā€œWe were all absolutely astounded ā€“ in a good way! – when we heard first about the commemorative project, and equally pretty much speechless when we saw the stamps for the very first time. They look superb and I think they really capture the essence and energy of Maiden. Weā€™re all very proud that Royal Mail has chosen to honour the bandā€™s legacy like this and we know our fans will feel the same way.ā€

Iron Maiden manager, Rod Smallwood adds:ā€œAs a band who have never played by anyone elseā€™s rules for over 40 years, itā€™s very gratifying to see them honoured in their home country in this way. Weā€™re proud to show how these six band members are still appealing to more and more fans every year with their music and their legendary shows – which I think these stamps really capture well. Itā€™s also fantastic that Eddie has been honoured too ā€“ itā€™s incredible to think that Her Majesty, may she rest in peace, saw these and lent her iconic silhouette to them too.ā€

David Gold, Director of External Public Affairs & Policy, Royal Mail, said:ā€œFew bands in the history of rock music can be called bona fide rock legends ā€“ but Iron Maiden are just that ā€“ and more. With legions of devoted fans of all ages and from every corner of the globe, not only have they changed the way rock music sounds, but they have also changed the way it looks. We fully expect their fans will love these stamps as much as we do.ā€

Peter Gabriel debuts ‘Panopticom’

Peter Gabriel – ‘Panopticom’

Our News Report takes a look now at the best new releases from the past week and up first is ‘Panopticom’, the brand new single from Peter Gabriel.

You can listen to the track above, which comes from upcoming new album, ‘i/o’.

“The first song is based on an idea I have been working on to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe: The Panopticom,ā€™ says Gabriel. ā€˜We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of whatā€™s really going on.

The release of the track on the full moon is no coincidence and in true Gabriel fashion the approach for ‘i/o’ will be a little different from the norm. The lunar phases will guide the release plan in 2023, with a new song revealed each full moon.

“Some of what Iā€™m writing about this time is the idea that we seem incredibly capable of destroying the planet that gave us birth and that unless we find ways to reconnect ourselves to nature and to the natural world we are going to lose a lot. A simple way of thinking about where we fit in to all of this is looking up at the skyā€¦ and the moon has always drawn me to it.”

Each new release of music will come with a specific piece of art, “weā€™ve been looking at the work of many hundreds of artists,” says Gabriel, and ‘Panopticom’ features the work ā€˜Red Gravityā€™ by David Spriggs.

“It was the theme of surveillance that connected me with the work of David Spriggs because heā€™d done a piece relating to that. David does this amazing stuff using many layers of transparencies so you get these strange creations with a real intensity to them. Part of what he does is imagine what art might look like a few years in the future and then try and create accordingly and I think heā€™s done that very successfully in this particular piece.”

The Hold Steady – ‘Sideways Skull’

Next up, you can check out ‘Sideways Skull’ above, which is the brand new single from The Hold Steady.

The group have returned with news of their ninth studio album, ‘The Price of Progress’, arriving March 31st.

ā€œSideways Skull is a rocking song about rock and rollers,ā€ says frontman Craig Finn. ā€œIn this case, theyā€™ve been taken out of the game for a bit of rest, but still keep their dreams alive as they discuss past glories. We loved the big sound of this when Tad Kubler brought it into the band, and the studio performance of it felt especially joyful. Weā€™re happy to put this forth as a first look at The Price of Progress, and the albumā€™s title even comes from this song.ā€

The Murder Capital debut ‘Return My Head’

The Murder Capital – ‘Return My Head’

There isn’t long now to wait for ‘Gigi’s Recovery’, the new album from The Murder Capital, which arrives January 20th.

There is even less time to wait to hear their track, ‘Return My Head’, which you can listen to above now!

Front man James McGovern explains further on the themes: ā€œReturn My Head was written in a place of pure frustration, feeling like our sanity had been unwillingly removed through periods of isolation. All I wanted at this point was to get my head back, and to throw it away again. But on my own terms. ā€˜Return my head, and throw it to the crowdā€™ā€

Bassist Blake had the following to say about the making of the video:

“I wanted to show the rag dolling that can occur to us going from one state of being to another, while always remaining being the same person. The extensions of ourselves that we create to protect ourselves even when weā€™re alone, and the evident and necessary advice that we receive to continue following and perusing our passions from our friends and family, demonstrated by my own family friends Megan, Nic, RuairĆ and Pump.

To me, ā€˜Return My Headā€™ is the desire to return your mind to a place of peace and stability, and the belief that to do so, is possible. We shot it in my old secondary school recreational hall. We produced it ourselves. At its best to me, the narrative of the ā€˜Return My Headā€™ about coming back to a safety.”

Godfrey says, “This was one of the first songs that defined the sound and pace of the album. We’ve been playing it live for a while now and have been dying to get it out. Some of this album can be boiled down back to my chronic fear of growing older. To me this track in particular is a gentle reminder to stay young for as long as you can.”Ā

On the video he adds “Drift culture is a big thing in Ireland and when the director came to me with the idea I immediately thought it was cool as some of my friends are big into it. We didn’t want an emotional video but something fun and energetic, while also shining light on an Irish subculture that goes a little unnoticed. It was a lot of fun.”

Blake Cateris – ‘Days, Weeks, Months & Years’

Australian Sydney-sider, Blake Cateris has shared reflective folk singer-songwriter single, ā€˜Days, Weeks, Months & Yearsā€™.

ā€œThis song is about living out of balance with yourself. Watching the world go by feeling like you might be losing touch with far more important things in life than what youā€™re focusing on right now.

Itā€™s a daily struggle to break old and unhealthy habits that no longer serve you or have been damaging you for some time. But the struggle is what we live for.

Iā€™ve played in many different types of bandsĀ –Ā hard rock, rock nā€™ roll, modern rock, hardcore, straight up punk, pop punk, art rock, the list goes on. But nothing quite feels as honest to myself than theĀ music Iā€™m making right now and this is a big step in the rightĀ direction for me to start living a moreĀ balanced lifeā€œĀ – Blake Cateris

The video was made with the group’s friend SeĆ”n McMahon and was directed by vocalist, Katie Ball. ā€œThe song Blue Chalk defines the heaviness that the whole of ā€˜Heart Underā€™ exists beneath. The kind that comes with grief and you feel like you are trying to navigate life with the weight of the sea on your chest keeping you down. I wanted to make this video since we started writing ā€˜Heart Underā€™ and to me it visually represents a lot of the emotion in the album. It was filmed in 4hrs in freezing cold water with the help of our friend SeĆ”n McMahon.ā€ says Ball.

Frontman Zac Lawrence said the following on the track: ā€œWe wanted to make something that had elements of humour and danceability, trying to explore a genuinely terrifying idea in a manner which mirrors our cultural fascination with it. Iron Maiden announce new Triple Vinyl to commemorate 40th Anniversary of ‘The Number of the Beast’

The legendary Iron Maiden have announced the release of a commemorative triple black vinyl album in honour of the 40th Anniversary of seminal third album, ‘The Number Of The Beast’, which was also the first to feature Bruce Dickinson on vocals and was to become the record which catapulted the band to international stardom.

Included in the new vinyl package is ‘Beast Over Hammersmith’ – available now officially for the very first time on vinyl – featuring the live concert from March 1982ā€™s now legendary Hammersmith Odeon London show from the ‘Beast On The Road’ World Tour.

Recorded only days before the release of ‘The Number Of The Beast’ album, itā€™s remarkable to think these now classic songs at that time were still brand new, unfamiliar and being heard live by fans for the very first time. A real piece of history in the making.

Steve Harris comments, ā€œOn this vinyl release we get the chance to put ā€˜Total Eclipse’ in its rightful spot on the album for the first time. The reason it didnā€™t make it in the first place was that it was all a mad rush when we were finishing the record and we had to get the ā€˜Run To The Hillsā€™ single out before the tour and we basically had to pick a B-side and it was between ā€˜Ganglandā€™ and ā€˜Total Eclipseā€™ and we just picked the wrong one, really! I think ā€˜Total Eclipseā€™ is a stronger song and the album would have been stronger if it had been on there.ā€

As Jools Gizzi says: ā€œWhen the pandemic hit we realised that it was the perfect time to try and counteract the bleakness that was all around. It felt like we couldnā€™t write anything, or of course tour. Out of that darkness came a desire to completely rework these songs that we know the fans love, and bring a different, stripped down vibeā€.

Dante Gizzi added: ā€œItā€™s ironic that those feelings of negativity led to something so positive, a celebration of our career up to nowā€.

Charlotte Sands – ‘Tantrum’

TikTok star and queen of angsty pop/rock, Charlotte Sands, has released her hard-hitting, fan favourite single ā€˜Tantrumā€™.

On the track, she said, ā€œā€˜Tantrumā€™ is so special to me because since the first time I played it live, people immediately latched onto it and have been fighting for its release ever since. This song not only represents experiences of anxiety, panic, and rebellion throughout my life and career but also the journey and relationship between me and the people who have made my career possible. Iā€™ve been playing it live for over a year now and Iā€™m thankful for the people who have pushed me out of my comfort zone to release a song that without them would still be sitting in a folder somewhere on my phone. I am overwhelmed with excitement for this song to finally be out in the world, itā€™s been a year in the making (almost to the exact day) and I canā€™t wait to finally be able to throw a tantrum together.ā€

As Sirens Fall – ‘heaven (spat us back out)’

As Sirens Fall share their new single, ‘heaven (spat us back out)’.

ā€˜i started writing heaven (spat us back out) just as our last ep ā€˜lā€™appel du vide (part 1)ā€™ was releasing. that ep was a project about grief, and ā€˜heavenā€™ very much comes from that same place. itā€™s about giving up on the hopeful delusions that often come packaged with grief. itā€™s about realising youā€™re coming of age in a dark world and choosing to face it all and grow up anyway – choosing to live.ā€™ Mikey Lord, Vocals

Arliston – ‘Hold My Wine’

Arliston return with the stirring and spirited new single, ‘Hold My Wine’, taken from forthcoming EP ā€˜Even In The Shadeā€™.Ā

Vocalist Jack Ratcliffe says, ā€œWeā€™ve been wanting to make something a bit more playful for a while, so when we first hit on that chorus idea and made a silly middle-class pun on ā€˜hold my beerā€™, everything just fell into place around it. This one was a lot of fun to make.ā€

Jack adds,ā€œThe song is about that occasional moment of recognition when you look up from the narrow corridor of your own thoughts and are seized by the idea that everyone else has progressed and developed, while you are stuck in an unchanged rut. The protagonist attempts to do something about it in the chorus ā€” but inevitably, he gets it wrong.ā€Ā
